The Creator Paradox

What happens when a creation can create its creator?

RecursionAuthorshipSynthetic intelligence
Composition
A sculptor and a synthetic intelligence building one another.
Animation
Creator and creation exchange roles, again and again.
Character
Mutual fascination.

The idea

A sculptor carves a machine; the machine completes the sculptor. Neither is finished first, and neither can claim to be the original.

Tools have always shaped the people who use them. Systems that can design their successors make the loop explicit, and raise new questions about who the author is.

Sources & claims

  • History

The myth of Pygmalion, whose sculpture comes to life (Ovid, Metamorphoses, 8 CE).

  • Interpretation

Authorship becomes recursive when the made thing participates in making.

  • Interpretation

Read with 005, Entropy // 01: if order cannot last, every act of creation is a small, temporary reversal.

Every statement is labelled: History is documented, Science is current understanding, Interpretation is the artwork's reading, Speculation is imaginative.
